Southern Hemisphere's biggest rodeo kicks off in Mount Isa

The gates are open for the 59th annual Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, the biggest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere, with record crowds expected to attend over the next three days.

Visiting Mount Isa, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the iconic rodeo had grown to become the world’s third largest competition and was a major event on Queensland’s tourism calendar.

“Last year, the Mount Isa Rodeo attracted more than 32,000 people, injected more than $9 million into the local economy and was elevated to major event status by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ).

“There is no doubt the Mount Isa Rodeo has helped put the city well and truly on the tourist trail, and I congratulate all of the organisers and sponsors for their ongoing support and commitment to making it a major, multi-award winning event.

"I think this rodeo is the best in the world-year after year, this great outback event has gone from strength to strength, which is great news for North West Queensland.

“This event has been nationally recognised when it won the 2016 Australian Tourism Award for Best Festival and Event,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for RUral Economic Development, Bill Byrne said the Government was dedicated to supporting regional events that would attract more visitors, boost the local economy, generate jobs and foster community pride.

“We know how incredibly important regional events are to the Queensland economy, with many families and businesses relying on tourism to thrive.

“That’s why we’re providing an additional $47 million in 2020-21 to extend our $400 million four-year commitment to grow visitor numbers in Queensland.

“This funding includes support for TEQ’s Destination Events Program, which has already delivered great success stories like the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.

“The Palaszczuk Government will continue to work in partnership with industry to open doors and opportunities in our regions, creating new tourism jobs and I look forward to more great events being held here in Mount Isa.”

The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from Friday 11 August to Sunday 13 August 2017.
